Discover the House of L’Artisan Parfumeur – A Glimpse into History
Discover the House of L’Artisan Parfumeur – Let’s go back to Paris in 1976, when L’Artisan Parfumeur was founded with the idea of changing the fragrance world. Founded by Jean Laporte, a pioneer in the realm of niche perfumery, the brand quickly gained a reputation for its bold, artistic approach. Using natural ingredients and crafting unique compositions, each scent was a true reflection of the brand’s dedication to creating exceptional fragrances.

The start of L’Artisan Parfumeur was quite intriguing. A friend knew Jean Laporte was a chemist and challenged him to create a banana scent to go with a banana costume for a gala at the Folies Bergères. After that, he quickly came up with grapefruit and vanilla fragrances too.
He experimented with “natural essences” and created unique scents. After the success of his first line of fragrances, Jean Laporte earned the title of L’Artisan Parfumeur – the craftsman of fragrance – from perfume enthusiasts.
He left the company in 1982 and went on to start Maître Parfumeur et Gantier in 1988.

Discover the House of L’Artisan Parfumeur – Originally based in Paris, L’Artisan opened its first store on Rue de Grenelle in 1979, but now has locations around the globe. For the first time in decades, a new fragrance brand emerged that wasn’t just a side project for a fashion label or designer, but a standalone niche brand in its own right.
With this in mind, Jean-François Laporte opened his first store to give customers the most genuine and immersive experience, turning fragrance into a unique brand experience. Before this, only the big, historical brands had been able to do that, dominating the fragrance retail scene.
In January 2015, Fox Paine & Company, the private equity firm that owned L’Artisan at the time, sold the company to the Spanish perfume group Puig, along with the British perfume brand Penhaligon’s.
The Folies Bergère
The Folies Bergère is a famous cabaret music hall in Paris, located at 32 Rue Richer in the 9th Arrondissement. Designed by architect Plumeret, it originally opened on May 2, 1869, as the Folies Trévise, featuring light entertainment like operettas, comic opera, popular songs, and gymnastics. It was renamed the Folies Bergère on September 13, 1872, after the nearby Rue Bergère. The venue reached the peak of its fame and popularity from the Belle Époque era in the 1890s through the 1920s.
The Folies Bergère was known for its extravagant revues, which included lavish costumes, elaborate sets, and often featured performances by nude women. One of its most famous moments came in 1926 when Josephine Baker, an African-American singer, dancer, and entertainer, made headlines by performing in a costume with a skirt made of artificial bananas.

The Folies Bergère is still open today and remains a vibrant symbol of French and Parisian culture.
