Hermès Un Jardin Sous La Mer: I was fully prepared to write an epic review about this one. I thought it would be full of praise. Maybe even one of my favorite reviews to write.

Then I sprayed it.

Friends, let’s just say my first impression wasn’t quite what I expected. From the very first moment, I wasn’t sure what to think, and I realized this fragrance and I might need a little more time to get to know each other.

Hermès Un Jardin Sous La Mer Review: Unique Masterpiece or Seaweed Overload?

Created by Christine Nagel, Un Jardin Sous La Mer transports the Hermès garden series beneath the surface of the sea. Unlike previous Jardins inspired by rivers, rooftops, or Mediterranean landscapes, this composition imagines an underwater world filled with marine plants, flowers, and mysterious mineral textures.

If Un Jardin Sur Le Nil is a stroll along the Nile, Sous La Mer invites you to dive beneath the waves. The brand describes Hermès Un Jardin Sous la Mer as a blend of the flora of Taha’a Island in French Polynesia and the mineral notes of its coral reef.

Hermès Un Jardin Sous La Mer: Fragrance Notes and Main Accords

Fragrance Family: Floral/Musk

Fragrance Notes: Tiare flower, Musk, Tamanu Nut, Mineral Notes

Main Accords: Marine, Floral, Mineral, Musk, Wood

Hermès describes the fragrance as an aquatic floral composition inspired by the underwater world. The official note list is minimal, but seaweed, marine accords, woods, and floral nuances form the backbone of the composition.

And honestly? That already tells you what kind of fragrance this is.

Hermès Un Jardin Sous La Mer Review: First impression

If you’re expecting sweet tropical beaches and suntan lotion, you may be surprised. This fragrance explores another side of the sea – salt, algae, wet stones, marine plants, and cool underwater shadows.

For some, it is a fascinating artistic creation that reveals its beauty over time. For others, the opening can be challenging and even off-putting.

The first spray isn’t one of those “Oh wow, what a fresh ocean breeze!” moments.

It’s more like: Wait… am I underwater?

Right from the start, you get this salty, marine accord, mixed with  green, almost plant-like textures and mineral notes. The best way I can describe it is seaweed-heavy – and no, that’s not an exaggeration. It really does lean into that wet, green, ocean-vegetation vibe.

Not everyone’s idea of a good time. Let’s just leave it at that.

Hermès Un Jardin Sous La Mer: What Does It Smell Like?

This isn’t the beachy, sunscreen-and-holiday kind of marine fragrance that many people expect. Not at all.

Instead, it leans heavily into seaweed, salty seawater, and wet green vegetation. It’s intensely marine, very vegetal, and feels more like standing on a rocky shoreline surrounded by ocean plants than relaxing on a sunny beach.

Interestingly, I also pick up a burst of mandarin. It’s fresh and sour, but there’s another facet alongside it that I personally don’t find very appealing. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is, but it gives the opening an edge that doesn’t quite work for me.

The first hour reminds me of that heavy, stuffy air after a brief summer rain – hot, humid, almost suffocating, as if there’s barely any oxygen left, with everything surrounded by seaweed drying under the sun, crusted with salt.

Is this a floral perfume?

I wouldn’t call this a floral in the usual sense, even though there is tiare in the composition. In perfumery, tiare flower (Tiaré / Tahitian gardenia) is typically a tropical white floral with a creamy, slightly sweet, solar warmth – often associated with Polynesian beaches, sun-warmed skin, and sunscreen-like solar florals.

But in this scent, I can’t really enjoy that gardenia facet. It feels distant, almost as if it is pulling away to catch its breath rather than fully opening up.

By the end of the day, I was honestly a bit hesitant to sniff my wrist again.

And because apparently, I enjoy confusion, I tested it four times. Four. Those were emotionally complicated moments.

Surprisingly…the dry-down actually behaved. It calmed down and smoothed into a coconut-tinged, soapy softness, with woods and airy musks appearing beneath the marine accord. It takes quite a while to arrive, but once it does, it becomes more wearable. Not ‘I’m in love,’ more like ‘fine, we can coexist peacefully.

Hermès Un Jardin Sous La Mer: Performance

Let’s keep it simple.

  • Longevity: Moderate, around five to seven hours.
  • Projection: Moderate. Like many creations from the Jardin collection, Sous La Mer more about elegance than projection.

What People Really Think About Hermès Un Jardin Sous La Mer: Love It or Hate It?

Specifically for this fragrance, I did my own research on what people tend to think about it.

Based on wearers’ impressions, Un Jardin Sous La Mer is far from a conventional fresh aquatic. That seems to be the common theme with this fragrance anyway. People either:

  • fall into a weird appreciation for its green-marine-vegetal personality
  • or get personally offended by the seaweed situation

People who love it usually say:

  • it’s unique
  • artistic
  • very different from typical aquatics
  • calming in a strange, meditative way
  • very “Hermès creative freedom” energy

People who don’t love it say:

  • seaweed overload
  • smells like an aquarium or wet algae
  • too strange for everyday wear
  • not what they expected from “marine fragrance”

How Does It Fit Within the Hermès Jardin Collection?

Compared to the rest of the Hermès Jardins, this one is definitely the most experimental marine interpretation.

  • Sur Le Nil – green mango garden, bright and vegetal
  • Méditerranée – soft fig and sun-warmed greenery
  • Sur le Toit – airy fruity garden on a rooftop
  • Monsieur Li – serene citrus garden, soft jasmine, and quiet freshness
  • Sur la Lagune – dreamy salty florals with soft woods and a gentle sea breeze
  • À Cythère – warm, dry, olive-golden vibe

Un Jardin Sous La Mer Compared with Un Jardin Sur Le Nil

Sur Le Nil feels greener and fruitier, with its famous green mango and vegetal freshness. Sous La Mer is more marine, mineral, and saline.

Un Jardin Sous La Mer Compared with Un Jardin en Méditerranée

Méditerranée feels warmer and more Mediterranean, sun-drenched and fig-rich, with a soft woody-citrus glow. Sous la Mer is cooler and more aquatic, with a mineral, underwater freshness.

Un Jardin Sous La Mer Compared with Un Jardin sur le Toit

Sur le Toit is brighter with crisp apple and aromatic herbs, while Sous La Mer leans toward seaweed and mineral accords.

Un Jardin sous la Mer Compared with Le Jardin de Monsieur Li

La Mer feels like standing at the edge of the ocean – vast, salty, and mineral. Monsieur Li feels like walking through a morning garden after rain – citrusy, fresh, and light in the air.

Un Jardin Sous La Mer Compared with Un Jardin Sur La Lagune

Un Jardin sur la Lagune feels like standing by the coast at sunset, with soft salty air and light florals in the background, creating a calm, natural, and slightly hazy seaside atmosphere.

Un Jardin Sous La Mer Compared with Un Jardin à Cythère

Un Jardin à Cythère offers a warm, dry Mediterranean feel, with grassy textures and a soft pistachio-like nuttiness that feels sunlit, natural, and slightly woody in the background. Un Jardin sous la Mer feels colder and more transparent, with a mineral aquatic freshness that is airy, abstract, and closer to underwater light than to sun-warmed land.

Hermès Un Jardin Sous La Mer Final Thoughts: Why This Scent Divides People

It’s honestly hard for me to express my opinion on this one because I like almost all the Jardins. I’ve tried to be as polite and fair as I can, and I feel like this review reflects my best attempt.

Hermès Un Jardin Sous La Mer isn’t a safe fragrance. Try the scent before you buy it, or if you trust my taste enough, explore other Jardins instead.

If you’re expecting a sea or ocean breeze perfume, this might throw you off a bit. It’s not your usual aquatic or coconut-sunscreen vibe.

Instead, it leans niche, boundary-pushing, and unconventional. I can totally understand why many people feel underwhelmed. If this came from a niche house known for abstract, artistic takes on nature, it would feel more expected. But from Hermès, it feels like a surprising experiment.

Either way, one thing is certain: you will have an opinion about it.
